Melissa and I had a good wander around L.A., today. I started HBP while she took her shower and was actually able to put it down - I think we all know by now that the series has taken a rather bleak, dark, and political turn, which is not exactly my favorite part of the Potterverse. I mean, Order of the Phoenix was my least favorite book. But any canon Harry Potter is better than no Harry Potter at all...so I read on.

Anyway, Melissa and I had lunch at Farmer's Market in L.A., then went to the La Brea tar pits. Call my crazy, but I like looking at lots of old bones of gigantic animals and shivering. So that was a good wander. Also quite amazing was watching the excavation of a new pit - and good god, it was messy-looking work. These people are sort of draining some of the tar out, but it was still there, seeping into everything, sectioned off from the solid, sticky bits. We watched several college-age looking girls in overalls measuring and taking notes on some fossils, and I was hard-pressed to imagine myself being able to tolerate the oppressive road-construction smell of burbling sulfur and tar.

Luckily, there are other people to do that.

Melissa and I drove up to the Griffith Observatory (although it is under renovation, I just wanted to point it out), and then drove through Griffith Park just to see some trees and open space. We got home to rest and wait around to pick up [livejournal.com profile] mon_of_the_dead, but just when I stood up to leave, I was overpowered with an insanely strong sense of nausea. I mean, I was feeling fine, and then like I was about to puke. Very odd. Melissa ended up picking Monica up by herself while I laid still and tried not to feel it.

Plans to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory got shelved in favor of Chinese take-out and a Harry Potter flick - this time Chamber of Secrets. As I type these updates, both Monica and Melissa are furiously reading, and once in a while one will laugh or say something that provokes a conversation.

Okay, I'm tired of talking to you people. Time to read more.
