Josef's Dead-A-Thon Birthday...
Oct. 8th, 2005 11:59 pmThe third disc of Firefly kept me up into the wee small hours of the morning. I don't know what it is, but the episodes on that disc are good. That one where their life support breaks is good, and the one where they rob the hospital is superb. Both are very tense, but also manage to emotionally get in under the skin. By far, the two best episodes I've seen so far.
A barking dog interrupted my sleep schedule, which meant that when I did go back to sleep I slept much longer than I meant to. I got up, chatted with Alex the Roommate for a bit, sorted out how I was going to type her client lists (she's paying me), and had some dinner.
Then I came upstairs and realized that Saturday, not Sunday, was the eighth, aka,
dedfool's birthday. I'd been happily planning to go to his birthday Sunday evening. Bad me.
I was dressed and out of the house like a shot, swinging by Trader Joes to get a few items to contribute to his Evil Dead-A-Thon. The pear cider they stock is quite tasty, and I have discovered that sparkling cranberry juice goes very, very well with vodka. Very well.
It was good to see
dreamoftwilight, who gave me a hug as I was coming in the door - what a great way to enter a house! I had some people to reacquaint myself with -
mirdonamy, and her husband, Bobby (I have no idea what Bobby's LJ account is). I'd only met them once before under similar circumstances (movie night), but they were a delight again. I also met Josef's new roommates, Todd and Ashley (if they have LJs, I don't know about it), who I didn't visit with much but who seem very cool and relaxed. I didn't get much of a chance to talk to
viandemifaust's girl, Lacey, but she seems quiet nice.
And then, perhaps most interestingly in a we've-been-meaning-to-do-it-for-a-long-time-but-didn't sort of way, I met Missy (
wiccanmaiden), Josef's girlfriend. She's a delight too. The first couple of words that come to mind are calm and nurturing, but she's not in any way matronly, if that makes sense. I mean, I have the strong, strong impression that a lot of the little improvements in the apartment are her doing. Just from the way we were able to talk to each other, I think we might have a lot in common. Also, I didn't feel at all uneasy around her the way I do with many new people when I first meet them. I took down her phone number, hopefully we'll be able to hang out at some point and get to know each other.
I have to say, it's amazing how much the new roommates have changed the place. There is a calm, laid-back, friendly vibe now, whereas the last time I visited, I was vaguely on edge throughout the visit. I don't know if it has to do with how the furniture is arranged, or just that the personalities are all meshing well, but Mike and Josef's place (as I've been thinking of it), is a good place to be now. I certainly intend to be there more often, if they'll have me.
The Dead-A-Thon itself was interesting, as I'd never seen any of the Evil Dead movies before. The first movie was dreadful, and was only tolerable when played in conjunction with lots of commentary from the audience. The second movie was way better, but again, probably not something I would want to sit through on my own. There are plenty of very, very good bits, like when Bruce Campbell fights with his own zombie hand, but I wouldn't want to sit through the whole movie by myself. It's only tolerable with all of the commentary of the people around me.
The third movie, Army of Darkness, has some wonderful moments, but I got a bit impatient with the straight-forward hack-and-slash bits. I've seen enough of that in other movies. Half a dozen small Bruce Campbells torturing a large Bruce Campbell, now that's something I haven't seen before. And it was worth seeing for this film. I have to say, though, it is gratifying to finally have the cultural references under my belt for when people quote them!
Um...not much else. Life seems pretty okay at the moment!
